A Free Guide to the Pillars of Herbalism

The 5 Pillars of Herbalism:
Learn How to See Like an Herbalist

Five Ways of Seeing is a glimpse into the way we teach herbalism at Casa Curativa: through relationship, pattern, and perception. Across these pages, you’ll meet the Five Pillars that form the foundation of our practice: Taste, Constitution, Tissue States, Herbal Actions, and Organ Systems, and you will begin to see how they weave together to create a fuller picture of both plant and person.

    Start Your Herbalism Practice Here

The Five Pillars give you a framework for doing exactly that. They help you move from asking:

What is this herb good for?” to asking: “What am I seeing here?

The same herb can meet different people in very different ways. The more you learn to recognize qualities, patterns, and relationships, the more useful your herbal knowledge becomes.

You don’t need to memorize hundreds of herbs to begin learning herbalism. You need to learn what to notice.

    • You’ve been curious about herbalism but don’t know where to begin.

    • You’ve learned a handful of herbs and their traditional uses, but want to understand the thinking behind them.

    • You’re tired of memorizing endless lists of what each plant is “for” and want a way to make sense of what you’re seeing.

    • You want to develop a deeper relationship with your own body; to notice its patterns, rhythms, sensations, and changes.

    • You’re fascinated by the way taste, temperature, constitution, tissue states, and physiology can tell a bigger story.

    • You want to learn through your own senses and experience, not just through information.

Inside Foundations of Herbal Medicine, we take these same pillars much further spending 7 days learning through observation, discussion, medicine making, time in the gardens, and direct experience with plants.

You’ll explore the full 12 tastes, deepen your understanding of energetics and physiology, make remedies by hand in our apothecary, and learn how to work with these frameworks together.

Foundations change everything. When you begin to understand the patterns moving through plants and people, you need fewer formulas and more observation. You stop simply collecting herbal facts and you start to see.

      Meet Julia, Casa Curativa’s Founder…

After many years of teaching herbalism, one of the things I feel most strongly is that learning plants is really about learning how to see.

When we first begin, it is natural to want a list. Which herb is for digestion? What should I take for sleep? What helps with inflammation?

But the deeper you go, the more interesting the questions become.

What is happening in the body? What are the qualities of this person? What is the plant showing us through its taste, its actions, its effects? What patterns are moving underneath what we can see on the surface?

These are the questions that shaped Foundations of Herbal Medicine.

We created a course and this guide to give you a framework for understanding herbalism as a living, interconnected system and a more nuanced way of working with plants and people.

Alongside the practical skills of making medicine, learning plant energetics, understanding physiology, and working safely with herbs, we want you to develop your own capacity to observe.

Because there is a point where herbalism stops being something you are simply studying and starts becoming something you can feel, recognize, and work with in your everyday life.

That is what I hope you find here.

A deeper understanding of plants. A stronger relationship with your own body. And a foundation you can keep building on for years to come.

      With love,
      Julia
